The Indian National Congress (INC) won 135 seats in the 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got 40 seats and the Janata Dal (Secular) won 19 seats. The INC’s victory was a significant shock, considering BJP had been in power in Karnataka for the previous five years.

Several reasons led to the INC’s triumph. First, the party was able to efficiently mobilise its support base, particularly among the minority groups. Second, the INC ran a well-organized and disciplined campaign, but BJP was troubled by infighting and allegations of corruption. Third, the INC profited from BJP government’s unpopularity, which was blamed for a variety of concerns, including rising costs and bad infrastructure.

Here are some of the significant elements that contributed to the INC’s success in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly election:

· Effective mobilisation of base support: The INC was able to effectively mobilise its base of support, notably among the minorities. These communities have long been significant supporters of the INC, and they voted in great numbers for the party in the 2023 election.

· Well-organized and disciplined campaign: The INC executed a well-organized and disciplined campaign. The party has a clear message and a solid team of candidates. The campaign was also well-funded, allowing the INC to reach out to a huge number of voters.

· Unpopularity of BJP government: BJP government was unpopular in Karnataka. The government was accused for a number of issues, including rising costs and inadequate infrastructure. This unpopularity aided the INC in mobilising voters and winning the election.

The INC’s triumph in Karnataka is an important development in Indian politics. It demonstrates that the party is still a big power in the country, and it may have consequences for the future general election in 2024. BJP’s defeat is a setback, but it is not terminal. BJP will most likely learn from its blunders and return stronger in the next election.
